We are Men with Hope to Bring
It was the Lord Jesus Calling Us.
In the aftermath of the French Revolution, a young priest and gifted preacher — Fr. Basil Anthony Moreau — heard a summons from God to form a community of priests and brothers dedicated to the education of youth and the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Nearly 200 years later and in 16 countries around the globe, Holy Cross men are sent forth to serve as educators in the faith for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

Our mission sends us across borders of every sort. But wherever we go, we go as men vowed to God and to one another, witnessing to the Gospel and supporting men and women of goodwill in their efforts to form communities of the coming kingdom.
Making God Known, Loved, and Served
“we go as educators in the faith to those whose lot we share”
– Constitutions of the Congregation of Holy Cross, 2:12
Our motto is: Ave Crux, Spes Unica — Hail the Cross, Our Only Hope! And for 175 years, we have worked to bring the hope of the Cross to schools, universities, parishes and other ministries on five continents of the globe.
The symbolic cross and anchors “coat of arms” of the Congregation of Holy Cross has evolved since Blessed Basil Moreau founded our religious order in 1835.
A Family Serving Families
In 1837, Fr. Basil Anthony Moreau founded the Congregation of Holy Cross in a little town near Le Mans, France.
Love is a key attribute in Christianity. The love of God is a prevalent concept both in the Old Testament and the New Testament.
We share God’s love in various ways in our homes, places of work, local community, and throughout the world.
When we speak of “worship,” we are referring to the life of congregation: attending worship services, creating music, honoring life.
Church life means faith, relationship, discipline, service, responsibilities of church leaders and members, and much more.
The practice of the Stations of the Cross — also known as the Way of the Cross — really began when early Christian pilgrims retraced the steps of Jesus during His last days in Jerusalem.
“I am convinced that Providence, which has in the past done everything necessary for the development and perfection of its work, will continue to bestow on it most abundant blessings. To ensure this, we must be constantly animated by the spirit of zeal and generosity which so holy an undertaking requires.”
Blessed Basil Moreau, Circular Letter 9

We Are Men with Hope to Bring
Holy Cross is God’s work. What started as a small seed has grown into a mighty tree. It is sanctification for the priests and brothers who have dedicated their lives to the service of the Lord and his Church through ministries of education, parish, and mission. It is the knowledge of salvation and hope in the cross of Christ for all whom they serve.
