Bishop Patrick Neary Returns to the Province of East Africa with a Shepherd’s Heart

Bishop being welcomed at Holy Cross Parish, Dandora, Nairobi

“He listened to them, talked to them, and blessed them.” These simple yet powerful gestures marked the first day of the pastoral visit of Patrick Neary, C.S.C., Bishop of the Diocese of St. Cloud, as he returned to the Congregation of Holy Cross Province of East Africa. His visit began at St. Denis Ssebugwawo Holy Cross Catholic Parish, where he did what a shepherd does best, tending to God’s flock with presence, listening, and prayer.

For many in East Africa, Bishop Neary’s visit is more than a formal pastoral engagement; it is a heartfelt homecoming. Before he was appointed bishop, he served as Superior of the then District of East Africa, guiding and accompanying the Holy Cross community during a formative period of growth. During those years, he was widely known as a devoted formator, a compassionate leader, and a spiritual father to many young men discerning their vocation.

His return as bishop is, therefore, a moment of grace and deep joy for the Holy Cross community and for the faithful who remember his years of dedicated service. The bonds he formed through mentorship, pastoral care, and leadership continue to shape the life and mission of Holy Cross in the region today.

The timing of his visit is especially significant, as it comes just ahead of an important ordination weekend that will gather members of the Holy Cross family and the wider Church in celebration. The presence of Bishop Neary brings with it a sense of anticipation and spiritual depth, reminding the community of the continuity of mission and the enduring relationships that sustain it.

During his visit, the Holy Cross community will also gather at Holy Cross Lake View Secondary School in Wanyange to celebrate 32 years of the Holy Cross mission and service. The occasion will include community celebrations and ordinations, marking another milestone in the region’s journey of faith and ministry.

Bishop Neary’s presence stands as a powerful reminder of communal fraternity and relationships rooted in faith. His return reflects the deep ties that connect members of the Congregation of Holy Cross across continents, united in their shared mission of service to the Church and to God’s people.

As he meets with communities, listens to their stories, and offers his blessing, Bishop Neary embodies the spirit of pastoral leadership—a shepherd walking among his people, strengthening their faith and renewing their hope for the future.
