“Ave Crux, Spes Unica – Hail the Cross, Our Only Hope!”
We thank God for the gift and growth of the Holy Cross Mission in Tanzania—a journey that began in faith in the year 2000 and continues to flourish in hope. On 5th July 2025, this remarkable milestone was joyfully celebrated with a Eucharistic celebration at St. Brendan Parish, Kitete, in Mbulu Diocese.
The Mass was presided over by the Rt. Rev. Anthony Gaspar Lagwen, Bishop of Mbulu Diocese, who joined the Holy Cross family and parishioners in giving thanks for 25 fruitful years of missionary service. Among the concelebrants was Rev. Fr. Peter Caxton Mayanja, C.S.C., Provincial Superior of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Province of East Africa, who officially launched the Silver Jubilee celebrations.
This commemoration honors the pioneering missionaries—such as Fr. Leonard Olobo, C.S.C., and Fr. Tom Smith, C.S.C.—who, together with many others, courageously laid the foundations of the Holy Cross Mission in Tanzania. Their work sowed the seeds of faith, education, and social transformation in Kitete and beyond.
From these humble beginnings, the mission has expanded to other regions including Mwanza, Musoma, and Sombetini in Arusha, impacting countless lives through parish ministry, education, and social outreach. Across these areas, Holy Cross continues to empower communities, accompany the faithful, nurture vocations, and build a future rooted in compassion, justice, and the hope of the Gospel.
The Jubilee celebration was a day filled with joy, reflection, and renewal. After the Eucharistic celebration, Fr. Peter Caxton Mayanja, C.S.C., welcomed the congregation, followed by vibrant cultural performances led by pupils from St. Brendan Nursery and Primary School. A panel discussion then explored the pastoral and educational contributions of Holy Cross priests and brothers in Tanzania over the past 25 years.
Throughout the day, Holy Cross Missionaries, educators, collaborators, and current Holy Cross members offered reflections on their shared journey of mission. These powerful testimonies were interwoven with traditional songs and dances, creating a vibrant atmosphere of celebration and unity.
A special highlight of the celebration was the blessing of commemorative crosses—each bearing a map of Tanzania—by Bishop Lagwen. These symbolic crosses were presented to every Holy Cross parish in Tanzania as a sign of shared mission and unity in faith.
As we mark this Silver Jubilee, we recommit ourselves to the mission entrusted to us—walking together in faith, inspired by our charism, and ever trusting in the Cross, our only hope.
