The Chapter of the District of East Africa
31st December 2020 to 04th January 2021

We started with a recollection on 31st from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The facilitator was Rev. Fr. Silvester Arinaitwe, A.J., a former Superior General of the Congregation of the Apostles of Jesus. He invited us to reflect on the history of Holy Cross in East Africa, a grace-filled history! The Holy Cross French Missionaries went to the United States in the 1840s, and the American Holy Cross Missionaries came to East Africa in 1958. This was God’s Providence! A lot has happened, joys and challenges. And now it is the time of the East African Missionaries. Following this, he invited us to count our blessings.

In the afternoon, we had opening addresses, first by the District Superior who was also the President of the Chapter. We had the blessing of the attendance of Rev. Br. Matthew Sabogu, C.S.C., from Ghana, and Rev. Sr. Theresia W. Mbugua, C.S.C., the Area Coordinator for Africa. Due to the covid-19 pandemic effects, our Provincial Superiors and other guests from overseas were not able to come. However, we were blessed to be joined via zoom by Rev. Br. Tom Dziekan, C.S.C., Provincial Superior of the Moreau Province, Rev Fr. Bill Lies, C.S.C., Provincial Superior of the United States Province and Rev. Fr. Peter Jarret, C.S.C., his Assistant and Vicar, and Very Rev. Bob Epping, C.S.C., the Superior General. Each of them encouraged us and also challenged us to attend to what is of most importance in our life and mission. We are grateful for their love, care, and support.

During the chapter, we had the elections for the two District Councilors and the delegates to the Province Chapters of the Moreau Province and the United States Province. We also celebrated the jubilees of three confreres: Rev. Br. John Flood, C.S.C., 50 years of religious profession, Rev. Fr. James Burasa, C.S.C., 25 years of ordination., Rev. Br. Jim Nichols, C.S.C., 50 years of missionary work in Uganda. Br. Jim is looking forward to celebrating 60 years of religious profession next year, 2022. The Main celebrant at the Eucharist was Rev. Fr. Tom Smith, C.S.C. Before the end of the Mass, Rev. Fr. Dick Potthast, C.S.C., the eldest member in the District, blessed the jubilarians. We are grateful to God, and we congratulate them.

Overall, the chapter was very successful. We are confident that the Lord has shown us what we need to do in the three years that we have started. It was the first chapter we have had without the physical presence of our Provincial Superiors and it has been a great learning as we petition to become the Province of East Africa.
